You know, before I ever met him, I thought Bogie really talked like he did in all those gangster films. I was shocked to discover that he didn’t. Offscreen, he bore little resemblance to the parts he played. He was a gent. In his words, “a last century boy.” His own man, standards high, true character and integrity. He would not tolerate a lie. So what people called “toughness” was not toughness. It was conviction.

So Bogie became a father at the age of 49, and more than a bit awed by it… There he was, the man who never thought he’d have a family, with a family. A wife he loved who loved him, and a beautiful son and daughter.
